The 28 February operation, publicly considered as a "postmodern" coup in Turkey and defined as a "correction to democracies balance wheel" by the leading commanders, occurred on February 28, 1997 overthrowing the coalition government led by Necmettin Erbakan of the Welfare Party. The Turkish Military did not follow unconstitutional actions such as dissolving parliament or withdrawing the constitution; Erbakan stepped down as a result of pressure. That is why it is labelled as a "postmodern" coup by some of Turkey's intellectuals, since it does not meet any of the official criteria to be defined as a coup d'etat. See also
