Corporate HistoryADTRAN was founded by Mark C. Smith and Lonnie McMillan. Incorporated in 1985 under the laws of Delaware, ADTRAN began operations in 1986 following AT&T's divestiture of the Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs) with restrictions that effectively barred their manufacturing of equipment. These events created an opportunity for companies such as ADTRAN to supply network equipment to the seven RBOCs as well as more than 1,300 independent telephone companies in the United States. Having firmly established a leading position in the telco arena, ADTRAN adapted those technologies for use in enterprise wide area networks, and quickly gained a significant share of this market. Both Carrier Network and Enterprise product lines have produced rapid, profitable growth, resulting in ADTRAN being selected as a NASDAQ 100 Index stock by the NASDAQ Stock Market. The company went public on August 9, 1994. With over three million ADTRAN-based local loops operating worldwide, ADTRAN has become a leading supplier of local loop access and deployment products for fiber, DS3, T1/E1, wireless T1/E1, Digital Subscriber Line (HDSL, HDSL2, HDSL4, SDSL, SHDSL), Frame Relay, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), and Digital Data Service (DDS) digital services. ADTRAN supplies more than 500 products across these major digital telecommunications technologies, including multiservice access platforms and Integrated Access Devices (IADs) for today's converged voice and data networks.
