Avant-punk is a corruption of "avant-garde," indicating the forefront of innovation. Sonic Youth may be thought of as the trailblazers of avant-punk,[1] having pioneered the integration of jazz and punk in the 1980s. The no wave movement anticipated their innovations. Other bands described by commentators as avant-punk include Fugazi,[2] The Ex[3], and Dog Faced Hermans.[4]
