The Apple II Family of computers consists of ALL Apple II-based computers (NOT to be confused with Apple II series of computers which is a sub-set of the family grouping). The Apple I was the immediate predecessor and foundation upon which the expanded Apple II was built. The Apple III was the immediate successor to the Apple II Plus and likewise was capable of performing all of the functions of the Apple II as well as advanced functions, in much the same way the Apple IIGS functioned. Therefore, the family comprises in an historical perspective, all related computers produced by Apple so long as they are compatible with basic Apple II operations or vice-versa.
