CAT:NCT

This category is for identical images using the same name in both the English Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

To put images and media files now available on Commons in this category:

  1. Use {{subst:ncd}} if the filename on the Commons is the same one as the filename here, which will put the image in Category:Images with the same name on Wikimedia Commons as of 27 June 2008. (If the category doesn't exist yet, please create it.)
  2. Use {{subst:ncd|Image:Filename.png}} if the file on the Commons uses a different filename, which will put the image in Category:Images on Wikimedia Commons as of 27 June 2008. (If the category doesn't exist yet, please create it.)
  3. Please always include the complete details from the English-language Wikipedia: image caption, author, uploader and upload date. This is particularly true for images under a GFDL or CC-BY license. In the case of {{PD-ineligible}} and {{PD-USGov}} licenses, the uploader and upload history is not crucial.

Note to Admins

Before deletion

If you plan to clean out the NowCommons entries remember to check if:

  1. The entry on Commons actually exists
  2. The entry has proper source and copyright information on the Commons page (note that bot uploads often mangle information; please correct any errors when this happens)
  3. The file names are the same (if not, remember to redirect all image links)
  4. The file was properly uploaded (preserving GFDL required history of revisions) if moved to Commons instead of being uploaded independently
  5. The file was properly added to an article or category in Commons
  6. The file has been marked with Template:NowCommons for at least one week. Waiting one week is not necessary if it was the uploader who moved the image and marked it.

Files not to delete

  • Wikimedia Commons keeps an archive of files that are in the public domain worldwide, which usually happens 70 years after the death of the author (or 70 years after publication if author is unknown). Images that can not be assumed to be public domain worldwide will be deleted from Commons, and should thus remain on English Wikipedia. For example, this includes German photos from World War I and paintings made by artists who died less than 70 years ago (such as Pablo Picasso).
  • Images for which a fair use claim is made. If the claim is correct the image should not be deleted (and the image should not be on commons).
  • Images with more than one creator if the differences of the versions are significant.
  • Images with uncertain or disputed source and/or license
  • Image description page contains a request not to delete the local copy

Post deletion

Restore the {{FeaturedPicture}} tags and inter-wiki links if any (by editing the image page on en and not commons).

Tools

  • Move-to-Commons-Assistant - Tool to create licence compliant image description pages for Wikimedia Commons.
  • CommonsClash (self copied duplicates only) - Tool listing duplicate media files present on both on the English language Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons that are duplicates. These can be deleted on this wiki. Backlog on 9 May: 3.713 media files.
  • CommonsClash (duplicates only) - Tool listing duplicates on the English language Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. One of these images can be deleted. Backlog on 9 May: about 34.000 media files.
