Chicago developed a hardcore punk scene in the early 1980's that was more experimental than its counterparts in Washington, DC, L.A., and New York City. Chicago's hardcore scene developed in and around Northside bars and venues around 1982. The most popular of these bands were Naked Raygun, Strike Under, Articles of Faith, The Effigies, and Big Black. A hardcore scene also developed in nearby Evanston, Illinois, the home of Northwestern University, and in Champaign, Illinois, the location of the University of Illinois. Chicago hardcore bands have included Plan of Attack, The Killer, Expired Youth, Sidewalk, Double Crossed, Few and the Proud, The Repos, Punch in the Face and D.O.M. Starting in 2006, the Chicago scene began to experience a renewal of involvement from the earlier punk crowd. The history of the punk scene began to be recorded in earnest on the web and in film. On November 24, 2007 the film: "You Weren't There," which documents the history of the scene was screened at the Portage Theater. The theater was completely packed and sold out. The film continues to be presented at small theaters around the country.
