Chief of staff

Article on other languages:

A chief of staff is the coordinator of the supporting staff and primary aide to an important individual, such as an elected official, general or other military leader, or business executive.

In French the post is called chef de cabinet ("chief of cabinet"), as in the chief of staff to the director-general of the European Commission, or the Chef de Cabinet to the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Chiefs of staff of staff are usually appointed directly by the officeholder he or she serves and may be dismissed at any time.

In the military, the chief of staff is the chief aide to a commanding officer, especially one in command of a large military unit or formation. It is sometimes the case that the chief of staff is more directly influential than the actual commander; this may be the case when the commander is a ceremonial commander-in-chief, such as a head of state.
