As a secondary investor, Coller Capital acquires existing private equity interests including venture capital, leveraged buyout and mezzanine capital funds, together with portfolios of privately held companies or stakes in companies. Sellers of these interests range from financial institutions, corporations, government entities and family offices. Coller has completed some of the largest transactions in the secondary market, but also will acquire small individual interests.
In 2003, it financed British Telecom's spin-off of its venture capital arm, BT Brightstar.[4]
In 2004, it acquired the majority of Abbey National's private equity portfolio. [5]
Investment Program
Coller Capital's latest fund, Coller International Partners V, closed in April 2007 with commitments from almost 200 international institutional investors. At $4.8 billion, it is currently the world's largest secondaries fund[6], although its leading competitor, Lexington Partners is currently raising a new larger fund and the two firms have alternated the leadership position in recent years.
