Amirouche Aїt Hamouda (commonly called Colonel Amirouche) was born in 1926 in the small locality of Djurdjura in Kabylie, Algeria. Amirouche was a leader in the Algerian War, organizing the maquis of the Wilaya Kabylie. Amirouche was a Kabyle, a Berber people whose traditional homeland is Kabylie or Kabylia in northeastern Algeria. He was killed by French troops on March 29, 1959. This event was much publicized, as Amirouche was considered a great threat to the French in Algeria. [1] Secularist politician Nordine Ait Hamouda is Amirouche's son. See alsoExternal links |
