Company's Coming is a popular line of cookbooks that was started by Jean Paré (pronounced "PAIR-ee") 25 years ago. The line of cookbooks has gone on to span over 100 and they have been sold all over the world.
The Company's Coming storyWhile Jean Paré was growing up she understood the value of a home cooked meal shared with family and friends is a key to a good life. She was taught to appreciate good cooking from her mother. Even her father praised her earliest abilities in the kitchen. When Paré left home, she took with her many family recipes, an intriguing desire to read cookbooks as if they were novels, and most of all the love of cooking. In 1963, all four of Jean's children had reached school age and Paré would then volunteer to cater the 50th Anniversary of the Vermilion School of Agriculture, now Lakeland College, in Alberta. Having to prepare 1,000 meals from home, Jean then established a catering business that would flourish for 18 years. Through the 18 years Paré would have many opportunities to test out different dishes with immediate feedback. The results were empty plates and satisfied customers. Whether preparing cocktail sandwiches for a house party or serving a hot meal for 1,500 people, Jean Paré earned a reputation for good food, courteous service and reasonable prices. Requests would mount for Jean's recipes. She was often asked the question "Why don’t you write a cookbook?" It was then she teamed with her son Grant Lovig to produce the first Company's Coming cookbook. On April 14, 1981 "150 Delicious Squares" would released and mark the debut of one of the world's best selling lines of cookbooks. Since the early days of Company's Coming, the company has grown from a spare bedroom in Jean Paré’s home where she would write the recipes. But today Jean continues to write recipes while working closely with a dedicated staff Recipe Factory, as the Company’s Coming test kitchen is affectionately known. At Company's Coming, Paré has assumed the role of a mentor and assists in the development of recipes people most want to use for everyday cooking and weekend entertaining. Every recipe in each book is tested before being put into publication. Jean’s daughter, Gail Lovig also works at Company's Coming. Gail is responsible for marketing and distribution, leading a team that includes sales personnel located in major cities across Canada. Company's Coming has licences located in United States, Australia, and other markets around the world. Bestsellers many times over in English, Company’s Coming cookbooks have also been published in French and Spanish. Familiar and trusted in home kitchens around the world, Company’s Coming cookbooks are offered in a variety of formats. Company's Coming cookbooks are considered "kitchen workbooks." The softcover Original Series, with its lay-flat plastic comb binding, is still a favourite among readers. Jean's view of quick and easy cooking with everyday ingredients has served her and her fans well. Paré has received many awards including Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee medal. Jean has been awarded Member of the Order of Canada, her country’s highest lifetime achievement honour. Jean continues to gain new supporters by adhering to what she calls The Golden Rule of Cooking: "Never share a recipe you wouldn’t use yourself."
