In geology the term compression refers to the system of forces that tend to decrease the volume of or shorten rocks. Compressive strength refers to the maximum compressive stress that can be applied to a material before failure occurs. In tectonics, plates are always subjected to compressive stress. The compressional forces on layers of rock create a folded mountain.

Reverse faults are often created by compression stress.
