In the British Empire the concept, which was eventually replaced by Commonwealth Realm, referred to

- The Dominion of Newfoundland, the former name of Newfoundland and Labrador prior to it becoming a Canadian province in 1949.
- The Dominion of New Zealand, a disused name for the Realm of New Zealand.
- The Dominion of Canada is similarly the disused name of Canada.
- Other former dominions include Australia, Ireland, and South Africa but while they were referred to as dominions the countries did not use the term in their formal names.
