Telecom Italia (BIT: TIT, NYSE: TI) is the largest Italiantelephone company. Now a private company, it was founded in 1994 by the merger of several state-owned telecommunications companies, the most important of which was SIP, the monopoly telephone operator.
On December 13, 2006, Telecom Italia suffered a widespread DNS outage. Newspapers including La Repubblica printed instructions on how users could switch their DNS service to OpenDNS to restore service.
