Protect the Environment
Andrew was an executive of the environment club in his high school, Thornlea Secondary School. At grade 11, he assisted hosting an assembly to increase environment awareness and promote Canadian government's One-Tonne Challenge which aims to have each Canadian reduce one tonne of global warming gases emission (e.g. CO2 and methane) a year. To tell everyone the truth, it's really easy to be environmental conscious. If everyone is willing to change their lifestyle just a little, we will all have a substainable Earth. Here're a few tips that are really easy to do to help protect the environment.
Reduce is the most effective method. By directly cutting down the production, we use up less raw materials, using less fossil fuel transportation, and lower the chance of buying sweat shop products.
Reuse is the next effective method. By giving away stuff to others (e.g. clothing, toys, TVs that are still functional, etc.) not only you are helping the environment and planet Earth, but also helping people in need.
Recycling is on the least effective of all 3R methods. However, it is always better than doing nothing. As technology improves, we are now able to recycle more materials. Recyclable items include paper, aluminum can, plastic bottom, glass bottle, battery, aluminum foil and foil ware, juice box (Tetra Pak), jugs, lids, milk carton, printer ink cartridges (and the list goes on...)
By turning off computers not in use, it saves a great amount of energy. If you are doing something that doesn't need the monitor, turn it off. The monitor consumes 60% of total power consumption.
Use a laptop instead of a desktop. Laptops actually use less energy and they're available on the go.
Unplug appliances that you don't use often. They (especially the ones that can be controlled by remotes) usually go into standby mode whenever it's plugged in, even if you don't turn it on.
Energy from the sun can save you a lot of energy if you know how to maximize to its highest potential.
Open your blinds during winter and close them in summer.
Try opening windows or using a fan instead of your air conditioner.
Turn up the thermostat setting on your air conditioner by 1 degrees Celsius and turn down the thermostat setting on your furnace by 1 degrees Celsius.
Food
Try to have a vegetarian meal at least once a week. It requires 10kg of vegetables to feed a cow to gain 1kg of meat. 10kg of vegetables feed more people than 1kg of meat.
Buy something that is locally grown. It shortens transportation which means that it consumes less fossil fuel. You're also supporting local farmers too!
Use a mug for coffee or tea instead of a disposable cup. Some places give you discount for this!
Bring lunch with a re-usable container.
Don't buy bottled water (especially in developed countries). Most bottled water are actually just tap water, if not in worse quality than your house's tap water.
Lower thermostat of heater in winter, wear a coat instead.
Purchase products with less packaging.
Use both sides of the paper.
Rely on natural light, especially if your room has a window.
Beware of what you are washing on your driveway (if you have one). Many people wash their cars on their driveways and the toxic chemicals ends up stormwater sewage basin where they will not be undergoing waste treatment before flowing into the nearest major lakes and rivers.
And finally, if you want to show your dedication towards the protection of the environment, please put this up this userbox.
