Before you leave a message about this bot leaving a template on your talk page:

  • If you were attempting to rename an article or create a disambiguation page: Compliance with the GFDL requires that the article be actually moved rather than copied with cut-and-paste to preserve editing history. Please tag the new copy with {{db-move}} and an administrator will be able to assist you.
  • If the original source was itself a copy of Wikipedia text: Reusing the text is probably okay, but make sure you link back to the original article to comply with the GFDL. If the site CSBot found is a Wikipedia mirror, you may want to notify the bot maintainer so he can add it to the list for the future.
  • If the original source is in the public domain: Reusing the text is okay, but you almost certainly want to attribute it with an appropriate template (such as {{DANFS}} or {{1911}}); this will cause CSBot to leave the article alone.
If you did attribute it with an appropriate template, but it was still flagged as a copyvio, then it's probable the bot does not know the template you have used. You might want to tell the bot maintainer so he can add it to the list.

Otherwise, remember that text found on other web pages is copyrighted by default. Unless there is an explicit permission on the page (or site) allowing reuse without conditions (or under the GFDL) you can not use that text in a Wikipedia article!

Thank you!

DCrk

Hello, CorenSearchBot tagged a stub I started (see above title), saying that it has detected possible copying of copywrited material. The material in question is literally ONE sentence. I could not find the matching sentence in the article linked by the Bot. Since molecular biology terminology is very precise and specific it is likely that a similar sentence exists, however, similarities of this kind would likely be found in the introduction to any article on DCrk. I have tried removing the tag on the edit history page unsuccessfully. I'd be grateful if it could be removed by someone with the ability/authority to do so

Many thanks User:George Damoulakis (talk) 1st August 2008 —Preceding undated comment was added at 08:48, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Bot exclusion list

Coren,

I was wondering if the bot has a list of Wikipedia mirrors to avoid false-positives? If so, would it be possible to add http://www.prescriptiondrug-info.com/ to this, as I've come across a number of these through WP:SCV? Apologies if I've missed reference to this somewhere in the documentation. Thanks, --Kateshortforbob 21:38, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes, it does. User:CorenSearchBot/exclude. It uses regular expressions, however, so if you're not familiar with them it would be best if you simply told me which sites you wish to exclude. It's fairly easy to understand for the most part, though, so you can probably manage. — Coren (talk) 03:27, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Is there a way to suggest pages to the bot?

Many times I see pages that feel like they were clearly written someplace else and just cut and paste (seeing smart quotes, or an "about us" POV) but I don't necessarily have the resources to find it and show the connection. Is there (could there be?) a way to "report" a page to the CSB if we think it is worth a check by CSB? KevinCuddeback (talk) 18:52, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

I don't know the answer to your question, but you could flag it for attention of a human editor by putting {{cv-unsure|~~~}} on the article's talk page. 69.140.152.55 (talk) 02:41, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
There is. You can add a wikilink to User:CorenSearchBot/manual, and the bot will shortly take a look at the page and post the result there. — Coren (talk) 03:27, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Flag as patrolled?

Hi,

Perhaps the bot should flag pages it tags as patrolled. If they're going to be looked at as a result of the tag, there's no point in new page patrollers checking them. --  Chzz  ►  22:05, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

That's an interesting question. I'm not sure it would be wise, since CSBot wouldn't bother with a pageful of goatse— all it knows how to do is check for obvious cut and paste. — Coren (talk) 03:27, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Query

I need help renaming about 200 articles. Doing this by hand would take me all day.

Can your bot rename articles, or be adapted to do so?

If so, please contact me.

Thank you.

It's not build to do, but there are a number of bot operators who have bots who can; you might want to ask at WP:BOTREQ. — Coren (talk) 03:27, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

edit summaries for Wikipedia copies

The bot distinguishes between a copy of a non-wikipedia article and a wikipedia article. Therefore, I find it funny that the bot doesn't have a correct edit summary for Wikipedia articles. The edit summary for copied Wikipedia articles "Tagging possible copyvio..........." is the same edit summary as non-Wikipedia copied articles. See link. --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 03:24, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

That's because the primary problems with cut-and-paste moves (which is the most common reason why that gets triggered) is a copyright violation (copy permissions are granted through the GFDL, which a cut-and-paste usually violates). — Coren (talk) 12:35, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Alex Bell (footballer)

On the discussion page for the Alexander Graham Bell page, there is a discussion about people searching for the telephone guy under Alex Bell and getting the footballer instead. A disambiguation page called Alex Bell that points to both the telephone guy and the footballer would be appropriate because there are probably other notables with similar names such as Alec Bell and Aleck Bell and Alexander X Bell, etc. I did not want to "move" the Alex Bell page to a new Alex Bell (footballer) page because that would eliminate the Alex Bell page which might mess up references from other pages. So I copied the Alex Bell material including discussion to a new Alex Bell (footballer) page and I intended to replace the Alex Bell page with a disambigulation page. I just noticed the instructions for db-move at the top of this page to preserve edit history. So my plan was incorrect. What would you suggest? Greensburger (talk) 23:28, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

This bot keeps getting false positives on new ship articles

I think this bot is having trouble with articles that contain infoboxes, as they are largely identical for ships of the same class and it's the first thing in the article. It keeps tagging (4 now) ship articles I have started when they are definitely quite legitimate pages. Someone should look into this as I'm finding it quite irritating now. Cheers. You wrote;

[edit] Nucleus fire station This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Nucleus fire station, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.wiltshirefirebrigade.com/About_Us/Find_Local_Sation/find_local_station.htm. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 07:06, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Reply to: Notability of Lira Luis

I can give you numerous references to the notability of architect Lira Luis. I created this article as a fan of architecture. I used this username as the name of the article because it is the most logical and easiest name to remember. If you do a search on "Lira Luis" from the Yahoo! search engine, you will see a lot of articles written about Ms Luis. I think the original article I wrote about her was unfairly reported and deleted. It appears as a blatant sabotage against a person by a group who appears to be very jealous of the success of Ms Luis. The persons in question are: Blakegripling ph, who conspired to taint the reputation of Ms Luis. Please read these articles that will justify the notability of the achievements of Ms Luis:

Speedy deletion of Dealer Online Marketing

A tag has been placed on Dealer Online Marketing, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam as well as Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. WashingManwithwings (talk) 18:23, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
