Hi there,

I see you are taking advice on whether the site www.semi-directory.com should be banned. I am the user adding it to categories. This is the first time I have used Wikipedia so I would appreciate someone talking to me directly instead of reporting me without involving me first.

I was under the impression that informational resources were ok? I understand the promotion of a company or products is against the rules but I am not doing either. The site is a resource that offers further information (in the form of technical papers, downloads and establishments involved in that area) on the associated categories.

I would appreciate it if you could explain things to me.

Thanks Themintyman (talk) 17:23, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

You asked about my comment here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Thingg#noob_alert. It appears that the issue has been addressed in several comments on the talk page of the IP you were using for the edits you said you had made, namely http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:195.173.69.2. 1)How are you affiliated with these *-directory sites and 2)are these yours http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/86.0.193.129 too)? 3)Are the sites themselves non-commercial? --IReceivedDeathThreats (talk) 05:29, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi,

Thanks you for getting back in touch. Please accept my apologies for the confusion over the various IP's I have been using. At first, I didn't realise I was on a public IP. I also made a submission from another PC so that would confuse things further. Finally, I created an account (this one) and have been using it since. I hope this explains things.

Here are the answers to your questions:

1) I created the site myself. There is only 1 site involved - semi-directory.com. I am involved with no others. 2) Of the posts listed on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/86.0.193.129, only the ones dated 1st may 2008 are mine. The others are not. I have no idea who wrote the others. 3) The anser to this is both 'yes' and 'no'. The site is free to use and free to register with. Every semiconductor establishment (commercial and non-profit) is entitled to a free listing in the directory. However, commercial organizations can upgrade to a 'premium' account to unlock certain tools such as the ability to post corporate events and press releases. Banner advertising is also available.

The site was created with the intention of helping people in the semiconductor industry research potential suppliers and offer a resource to download technical papers, literature and interview for free (www.semi-directory.com/downloads.asp). The primary intention of the site is not to make money.

Since a few people are involved in this issue now, who is the admin I should be talking to about this?

Themintyman (talk) 12:15, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Talk_page_guidelines mentions using colons for threaded discussions, like I've used here. I see you've figured out how to sign your post; good going. If you feel your edits respect Wikipedia:Spam#External_link_spamming, then that page should have pointers about how to proceed. I'm thinking it doesn't. That doesn't mean it's not a legit site. It just means I think it doesn't belong where you've put it here on Wikipedia. --IReceivedDeathThreats (talk) 19:05, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Ok, i've got the colons sorted out. Thanks for that. I read the page you pointed me to but it doesn't indicate anywhere how to contest a removed link. I reviewed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links and feel I do cover the following points:
   * Is it accessible to the reader? - yes
   * Is it proper in the context of the article (useful, tasteful, informative, factual, etc.)? -yes
   * Is it a functional link, and likely to continue being a functional link? -yes
*Where editors have not reached consensus on an appropriate list of links, a link to a well-chosen web directory category could be used until such consensus can be reached.
The site I linked to is not affiliated with any industry publications or funded by any unbrella corporations. It is standalone and designed to aid research. Wikipedia does not offer a comprehensive list of organizations related to a specific feild in this area so I thought I could contribute.
Is there any way I can get this decision reviewed? Regards, Themintyman (talk) 21:08, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of TronixCountry

A tag has been placed on TronixCountry requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company or corporation, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for companies and corporations.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. NuclearWarfare (talk) 04:36, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

You'd think more than a few hours to object would be appropriate. The company's founder and LOB are (obviously) controversial; it merits a listing.--IReceivedDeathThreats (talk) 18:32, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Deletion logs shows: 13:25, 9 July 2008 Rmhermen (Talk | contribs) deleted "TronixCountry" ‎ (A7 (group): Doesn't indicate importance or significance of a group/company/etc.)
This deletion has nothing to do with censorship as you claimed at my talk page but with following the Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) guidelines. We suggest that you complete an article as well as you can before first posting it. More complex articles can be assembled at a subpage of your user page and then moved into the article namespace. If you disagree with the deletion, you can request undeletion at Wikipedia:Deletion review. Rmhermen (talk) 16:19, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
This is the entire text of the article:

TronixCountry, AKA Tronix Country, AKA Tronixcountry is an installment credit company founded by CEO Bruce Mattare[1], formerly of BlueHippo, for customers with poor credit that offers personal computers, LCD televisions, and other high-tech items.

The only references regarding your company is Yahoo! groups, and the BBB. No Google News hits that I can find. And, if it is your company you are writing about, then WP:COI comes into play. Paranormal Skeptic (talk) 23:52, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
ORLY? [Talk:TronixCountry the screenshot, etc. here] suggests you're not looking properly. TronixCountry indicates you're wrong too. And to top it off, you've insulted me. Somehow I'm keeping it cool.--IReceivedDeathThreats (talk) 03:15, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Ok, the consumer affairs link I did not see when I tagged it. I saw the yahoo! groups link and the BBB links. As for the WP:NPA, I might have confused the situation with another user arguing their company was notable, and I apologize. However, keep in mind WP:AGF please. Consider the tag for speedy delete a way to prod the original creator to flesh a page out more prior to creating an article. You can do so on a sub page of your userspace ie User:Paranormal_Skeptic/Rolling_Hills. This was all in place prior to me committing it to the article space. Again, I apologize for any percieved Personal Attack, none were meant. Paranormal Skeptic (talk) 11:17, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
No one's perfect. It seems you use speedy exclusively instead of AFD, based on looking at your recent edits. It seems you believe you're doing the right thing under IAR, and perhaps in most cases where you use speedy deletion, that's true. But I can't consider the tag for speedy delete a way to prod the original creator to flesh a page out more prior to creating an article. Because that's not what it is. --IReceivedDeathThreats (talk) 05:17, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

WTF

The user doesn't have to change the name because it is in no way disruptive or in violation of the username policy. Erik the Red 2 IReceivedDeathThreats (talk) 05:31, 2 October 2008 (UTC) 01:50, 2 October 2008 (UTC) at AN/I--IReceivedDeathThreats (talk) 05:31, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Blocked

This account, IReceivedDeathThreats, has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia, because your username is disruptive.
This is often not a reflection on the user, and you are encouraged to choose a new account name which does meet our guidelines and are invited to contribute to Wikipedia under an appropriate username. If you feel this block was made in error, you may quickly and easily appeal it - see below.

Our username policy provides guidance on selecting your username. In brief, usernames should not be offensive, disruptive, promotional, related to a 'real-world' group or organization, or misleading. Also, usernames may not end with the string "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.

If you have already made edits and wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name you may request a change in username. To do so, please follow these directions:

  1. Add {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. This is possible because even when you are blocked, you can still edit your own talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
  3. Please note, you may only request a name that is not already in use. The account is created upon acceptance – do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change since we can far easier allocate your new name to you, if it is not yet used. Usernames that have already been taken are listed here. For more information, please visit Wikipedia:Changing username.
  4. In the alternative, you can "abandon" the contributions under this username and create a new account, which is much faster and easier.
Last, the automated software systems that prevent vandalism may have been activated, which can cause new account creation to be blocked also. If you have not acted in a deliberately inappropriate manner, please let us know if this happens, and we will deactivate the block as soon as possible. You may also appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|your reason here}} below or emailing the administrator who blocked you. MCB (talk) 06:20, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

This blocked user (block log | autoblocks | rangeblocks | unblock | contribs | deleted contribs) has asked to be unblocked, but an administrator has reviewed and declined this request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock request while you are blocked.

Request reason: "I'd like to return to productive article editing. Is anyone willing to make the block non-indefinite (as was done for IRDT, which I made per the suggestion above)? Is anyone willing to allow me to keep my name? (If no, on the latter, I want to rename, and will deal with that first thing.) I wouldn't even bring up the idea of keeping my username except that a couple admins said they don't think my name violates policy, explaining thus:(Posting on UAA is a request for the user to be blocked. I don't see how this could be construed as a vio of the username policy. Erik the Red 2 01:41, 2 October 2008 (UTC) ) and (Question: Was there ever any reason to block this guy before you guys started fucking around about his perfectly fine username or is this block completely the fault of this thread? John Reaves 17:06, 2 October 2008 (UTC) Self-answered: "No, there wasn't. We are the real trolls here because we hounded this guy about his harmless username until he flipped and we got to block him. Now hopefully we can continue this pattern of being worthless to the encyclopedia while simultaneously ruining other people." John Reaves 17:16, 2 October 2008 (UTC) Aside from anything else, my username serves to and I can't think of another one that isn't worse. I've had the name for over 2 years and it's never been a problem at all until this week it became important that I be blocked. My bad for calling those involved on bad behaviour and calling people on stuff in general; I've learned a lesson. Since there's 3 users saying there's no actual policy violation, the question is: is the name causing disruption? I don't think so; it worked fine for 2+ years and some other reason would have been found to block me this week if my name had been BoringName. Anonymous876876 is not OK; I don't know what I'll do if I have to come up with a new name. But just to be clear: I'll go with a yes on request one if I can't get a yes on both."

Decline reason: "While there are dissonant voices (I personally think the username is borderline), I think the consensus is against you using this username. Usernames shouldn't make harmonious editing difficult. With that in mind, I see that User:IRDT's block was shortened to 24 hours. I advise you to use it as your account. You can state what it means to you on your userpage, if you wish. I know this is not the answer you were looking for, but I hope you'll be able to help us enhancing Wikipedia under that new username. — -- lucasbfr talk 20:20, 2 October 2008 (UTC)"

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read our guide to appealing blocks first and use the {{unblock}} template again. Abuse of the template may result in your talk page being protected.

Okay, a couple points. First, I don't think your username is good, but I also don't think you need to be forced to change it, because it's only really hurting you. (It's hurting you in the sense that it makes people pre-judge you. That's bad for your Wikipedia experience, but not really bad for the encyclopedia.) I think many other admins and independent users agree with this. Second, I would be willing to unblock you to take part in a new WP:RFCN -- that is, a discussion about your username. The previous one was "closed" very poorly, and conflated a behavior issue with a username issue. Your username isn't great but it was really your behavior that justifies the block. I don't think there was consensus that this username is inappropriate, but there was consensus that you should be blocked. Third, I want to point out that if you are willing to switch over to a new username, it can be done through a request to change your username, which will migrate all your contributions with you. If you want to do this for User:IRDT, you'll have to request that that username be moved to something else first (e.g. User:IRDT-usurped) and then request that this username be moved to User:IRDT which will no longer be taken at that point. Mangojuicetalk 20:32, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for being a voice of reason. I was about to Re-request, bolding the section that you now see in bold. Not necessary now. I need to think about things in light of what I've learned: I've read the current RFCN but my experience to date suggests engaging that or a new RFCN would be highly counterproductive. I'll hold out for you (who wrote "...I also don't think you need to be forced to change it...") or someone else who will read my unblock request above and decide to honor it.

ALL: please hold off on further edits - comments, advice or criticism - 'till I return; I do not want more, at least not for the next 48 hours. Mangojuice, please respond; did you mean I don't have to change it? Did you mean that's your opinion and you will unblock me on that basis? Or did you just mean that's your opinion and you will unblock me only for the purpose of further discussion?
