mwpush.pl The script doesn't add content to an existing page. It will erase whatever is there before with whatever you give to it as input. Unless you use the -e option, that is.

I suppose it would not be terribly hard to do this; the script could capture and store the content of the editing textarea during its first visit to the target page when it gets the wpEditToken. Then, the script would need to be further customized to do whatever altering you want it to do to the text. Actually, if all you wanted to do was do something like add a standard template to the top or add something like a category to the bottom of a page, it wouldn't be too hard to improve the script to include "prepend" and "append" options. The script would have to save the original content, then output the prepend text, the original article text, and the append text. There's a variety of ways that could be done...

WikiProject Telecommunications

I've signed up for the WP on the proposal page, but notice that there's been a significant amount of time that's passed since the proposal was listed. I've noticed a lot of "hit and run" editing (not a bad thing, just that people don't converse much, just change details in telecomm) and wonder if it's allowable/encouraged to make a note of the prospective WikiProject on key telecomm articles?

Generally, I specialize in cellular carriers and MVNOs, but would find it fun to work on SONET, NANP, CLEC, and other interesting land-articles. (Yes, I'm a telecomm geek that is disguised as a violinist by day! Talk about a secret identity!)

The point you raise about protecting the page - I don't consider it an appropriate response to 3RR violations. Anyone else who wants to edit the article is bound to ask "Why am I being penalised when someone else committed a blockable offence? Why not block the editors as you're supposed to and let us get on with it?" It's less confrontational, I agree, but only because it's less personal, not because it's less damaging. As for Jeff coming back through his IP, if I remember correctly he didn't use it to edit Falun Gong, just to protest his block.

Editor comments in articles

What kind of statements can Wikipedia editors add to an article that aren't verifiable by content, but instead are gleaned from a lack of content according to the editor's own observations. There's a comment on the Village pump about the ability of editors to include their own "analysis" of a website.

This Village Pump question is by an editor who made an entry that I thought was POV, so I asked for a citation. I removed the entry after he admitted that he did not have one - he tried to justify it by claiming it should stand unless someone proved it wrong. That didn't really fly, so then it morphed into proposed statement of: "A thorough examining of her website reveals no attempt to evidence her teachings." which seems kind of weird to me...

It just looks like since the other editor can't seem to find any citable sources for criticism about the subject of the article, he's making his own comment about evidence, but it's wrapped up in an apparent comment about the contents of the website itself.

The latest version is: “No part of the site is specifically devoted to the topic of providing proof that Esther is channelling anyone - although many testomonials of her clients are available."

Is this a good comment to include in a Wikipedia article? In the past, I’ve been caught up in finding citable references for all my edits, but this is the first time I’ve encountered an Editor’s own observation that utilizes the reader’s potential observation as a reference.

Cannot submit content using mwpush.pl

MWpush.pl and cookies

Hi KeithTyler. I am trying to use your mwpush.pl script on a local MediaWiki installation, and it is having trouble staying logged in. On my installation users are required to log in to edit pages. mwpush.pl logs in OK (gets the 302 response) but when it tries to visit the page it wants to edit (and get the token) it gets the "You have to log in to edit pages" page instead. I think this is because the script is not holding the login cookie, but I'm not sure. I'm running Windows XP with MediaWiki 1.8.2 and ActivePerl 5.8.8.820, and I haven't modified the script at all. Interestingly enough, the script works fine with another local wiki, so I'm thinking it's the wiki server. I don't think it's actually setting the cookie in the first place. The wiki I'm having problems with is on a Windows 2000/IIS 5.0 machine, whereas the one that works is going through Apache 2.2. I bet it's some sort of conflict between PHP and IIS in their handling of the session data... well, thanks for the response anyhow. ~MDD4696 19:13, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Discrimination-stub

Hi - I see you have recently created a new stub type. As it states at Wikipedia:Stub, at the top of most stub categories, and in many other places on Wikipedia, new stub types should be proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, in order to check whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, and whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies.

It is far from clear that your new stub type would have the 60 stubs usually required for a separate stub type, and it is, in any case, already covered by sociology-stub, a stub type not yet in need of splitting. Your new stub type is currently listed at WP:WSS/D - please feel free to make any comments there as to any reason why this stub type should not be proposed for deletion at WP:SFD. Yup, that is kind of the nuance of WP:CANVASS. I've always failed to see why canvassing / notifying users is necessary anyways; there are so many Wikipedians that I figure, because of brownian motion of Wikipedians and the application of the incompleteness theorems, consensus will be formed whether or not members of a specific group are or are not notified. ^^;; --Iamunknown 05:01, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

It's not wrong for them to receive the message, but its wrong to place the message on their talk pages and wrong for persons receiving the message to act on the message without disclosure. Votestacking is difficult to understand and your actions were innocently done. Forking micronations

Further to recent discussions concerning the Sealand / Fort Roughs articles, I'm considering a similar fork of Seborga. Currently this is a hodge-podge of information about the Italian municipality as well as the micronation which overlays it. Far too overzealous

This bot should not be undoing valid image inclusions. It lacks the intelligence to make good decisions as to whether the images should be removed or not. It only seems to base its decision on whether or not the image page has text outside of its templates. Actually I really don't even know if that is good enough.

Thing is, editors shouldn't have to learn OrphanBot's personal policies in addition to Wikipedia's policies in order to ensure the continued condition of articles. This would invite a never-ending problem of needing to know the rules of every bot on WP. Removing content from articles in the brain-dead way that OrphanBot does is a disruptive practice. - Keith D. OrphanBot is far more conservative than Wikipedia's policies. Where Wikipedia policy requires a source for an image, OrphanBot only requires text outside a template. Where Wikipedia policy requires a valid fair-use rationale, OrphanBot only requires an attempt at writing one. Where Wikipedia policy requires that images marked as not having source or copyright information be deleted, OrphanBot only removes the images from articles. As long as you follow Wikipedia's image policies, OrphanBot won't bother you. --Carnildo 00:41, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

I've aleady read it, thanks. As far as I can see, there is nothing prohibiting someone from creating a custom sig in Wikipedia (especially since it is offered as an option). If custom sigs are ever considered "illegal" in WP, then I'll change it back. Until then, I'd like it to stay as it is. Why pick on someone who tries to contribute constructively to WP? By deliberately obscuring your real username

Another assumption by yet another WP administrator. Why do you think I am trying to deliberately obscure my real username?

and not linking to your user page or talk page, it makes it unnecessarily difficult to determine who you are or to get to your user page or talk page.

Finally, a reasonable explanation; but why did it have to come after an unfounded accusation? Why not give the me the benefit of the doubt first?

I'm guessing you know already how to make a link to your user and talk pages; just add them to your custom sig.

Since WP administrators appear to be somewhat like supervisors, I have to be curious if WP gives any kind of "training" to admins before sending them out to police contributors. Because, to be honest, there are a number of WP admins that have not one clue how to be civil and interact with contributors in a professional and polite manner. Hence, my previous statement about WP becoming another haven for internet control-freaks. Y'all just end up coming off like male bovines in a Mikasa outlet store - and you know what? It's irritating.

Map on Campbell County, Georgia

Several months ago, on Talk:Campbell County, Georgia, you requested a copyright examination. I have looked into the matter, and have communicated with the person who digitized the image and placed it on the web, and claims copyright on it. She declines to authorize use on Wikipedia. It is my view that legally the image is PD, and may be used on Wikipedia as such, but whether this is a good idea is less clear. Discrimination template

I noticed that you took speciesism and animal rights out - I've requested a clarification at the basically unreferenced article discrimination on the matter, but it's merely a truism if we leave it out. Should we not make the template a little broader instead, such as prejudice? Hi, could you comment on the current moving of the Men's Rights and Masculinism articles on the template as one editor has strong opinions as to where they should go. Thanks for uploading Image:Ucayali.gif. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

Thanks for uploading Image:Krugman_FPO.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

mwpush.pl: Wide character in syswrite

Nice tool in mwpush.pl. Only one issue: it seems that wide characters are not allowed in uploads? Are you aware of any way around this? Thanks Btyner 03:45, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

For example, Andrey Markov (Soviet mathematician) has some Cyrillic encoding. When I try to upload a new version of this page, I get

Discrimination footer/sidebar/etc templates

Is Paul Krugman's image really copyrighted free image?

I attempted to relocate Image:Krugman FPO.jpg to Commons which allows editors of other language Wikipedias could use the image freely. However, I wonder the image from the site[4] really falls under the {{CopyrightedFreeUseProvidedThat}} because the image policy of the university website does not specify the "free usage".[5] It just says Photography policies and restrictions • Credit should be given to the photographer/Office of Communications, Princeton University.
