It is no great secret that, over the years, Wikipedia has seen many colorful moments of fun. Also no great secret is that Wikipedia has seen many forms of vandalism. Occasionally, an edit falls into both categories: it is vandalism, needing to be reverted, but it is also creative, and some Wikipedians find it entertaining. For many years, the bits of vandalism and/or fun that struck people's fancy were kept on a page called "Bad Jokes and Other Deleted Nonsense", or "BJAODN". In fact, it was one of the oldest pages on Wikipedia. BJAODN existed before the transition to phase II software. Here is the original explanation of the page:
We need a page where bad jokes and other deleted nonsense can rest in peace. So, here it is! [I'm half tempted to suggest keeping the jokes inline with the pages, as they must sort of give the encyclopedia some lively color. But I do know it'd just get carried away and turn into an encyclopedia of silliness, so look forward to frequent updates of this page. ;-)
However, over time, consensus shifted against keeping BJAODN on Wikipedia (see Wikipedia talk:Silly Things), and it came to be viewed by many as encouraging vandalism. Things are no longer added to this group of pages on Wikipedia itself, and only a few highlights are maintained below.
Deletion discussions
To understand how the majority of the content here came to be deleted and moved off Wikipedia, please study the following discussions.
June 2, 2007 - Deletion review (of subpages) - BJAODN should continue to exist, but it must be absolutely free of GFDL violations
August 14 2007 - Speedy Delete
[citation needed] Pages unilaterally deleted due to ongoing lack of progress on GFDL issues from June decision and vandalism concerns (WP:DENY). Minor controversy ensues, with some pages being undeleted, a Deletion Review being opened, and a MFD case (#5) being opened in parallel. The MFD case was closed in favor of the Deletion Review case, which itself was closed with the decision to relist on MFD (#6) for a formal communal decision.
This page was created by a single user, tjproechel, and was active for a little more than two weeks. The article had maps, portraits, photos, even references and footnotes! Its fictional nature was only discovered when no google search results were found for the Upper Peninsula War. (If it is not on google, it doesn't exist.)
