Oversight is a form of enhanced deletion, available for some edits that even Wikipedia's administrators should not be able to see. Follow the instructions below to request oversight.
Routine oversight requests are often processed within minutes, although this may vary.
When a user or member of the public may request oversight:
- Removal of nonpublic personal information about an individual. This can be your own private information, or information about others, including (but not limited to) phone numbers, home town or address, workplaces or schools, and identities.
- Removal of vandalism which appears to include non-public information intended to enable harassment (eg someone's details and a request to phone them).
- Removal of potentially libelous information when the subject has specifically asked for the information to be expunged from the history, the case is clear, and there is no editorial reason to keep the revision.
If none of the above conditions have been satisfied, you may request deletion which will delete the text from public view, but it will still be accessible to administrators.
How to request oversight:
Anyone, at any time, may report matters needing oversight. Please supply the entire URL of the page which contains the personal information, and (if not obvious) a brief description of the information which needs removal, and an explanation of why it needs to be removed.
in several ways, including email or IRC.(IRC tutorial) Details are below.
In an emergency you can also contact any Wikimedia Steward privately via IRC.(#wikimedia-stewards and ask for an oversighting)
Please:
-
- Include actual diff(s) (or from/to times) in your email, if you are familiar with Wikipedia. It saves a lot of time and gets the text oversighted a lot faster.
- Consider deleting the relevant revision(s) first if you are an administrator Deletion removes them from public view until they can be oversighted. Normal diffs don't work for deleted revisions; it's easier to give the number of deleted revisions, who deleted them, and the date of deletion, or the links for the deleted diffs (see Special:Undelete). Don't use words like "awaiting oversight" or "reverting" in the deletion summary.
