Advanced Signatures

It is proper Wikiquette to sign your messages on talk pages. This is done by typing ~~~~.

Some users have fancy signatures with lots of colors and links. Here are 3 ways to do that:

  1. Go to your preferences and type wiki-markup code (and/or HTML markup code) into the signature box. Check the box that says "Raw signature" and save your preferences. Or...
  2. Open an HTML editor (e.g. Frontpage) and design how you want your signature to look, putting links in it by adding brackets [[ ]]. Then select it and click the HTML tab and copy the code of your text into the signature box mentioned above. Be sure not to copy the tags at the beginning and end of the code that say <p> </p>. Or...
  3. Find a signature you like, and then click edit this page. Cut and paste the signature into the signature box (see #1 above), but change all the links to your links: you don't want your signature leading to someone else's user page!

How to create a new page

In the searchbox, type in the name of the article you wish to create. When told that the page does not exist, click the link either in red or with the question mark.

You can also type the title as the URL in your browser's link field and get there directly:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_name

Perhaps the easiest way to start a new article is to follow a link to a page that doesn't exist yet. Depending on your settings, these links may show up as or have a question mark at the end of the link (red links).

edit

Hello there (totd announcements and task list)...

  • The tip set needs to be updated for 2008. New tips are needed, and existing tips need to be updated.
  • The tip archive for 2007 has been completed.
  • Help sort. The tip library has a section at the end with tips that need to be placed in the appropriate section on the page.

Tomorrow's tip of the day...

Be neutral when editing Wikipedia

Wikipedia strives to be neutral. Remember, you have a point of view. Think about whether your edits will breach this. If you think other users will think it is POV (Wikijargon for "biased"), then run it past other editors using the talk page for the article. This will allow for constructive debate and editing rather than an edit war.
