Welcome to Wikipedia's Current Local City Time (CLCT) or Current City Time (CCT) WikiProject

Goals

The aim of the CLCT is to insert the current date and time corresponding to a location. The geographical location should be a city within an already existing Wikipedia article. Due to the electronic nature of Wikipedia we are capable of formatting, in the most efficient way possible, the exact time at a given location. Policies and guidelines should work to support this aim.

Background

This idea originated while reformating my talk page. It was inspired by WP:TIME and User:Xilar. In January 2007, a trial run began with the article Ottawa. Time Zones are diverse throught the entire world, maybe sub-conciously the fact that my friend just left for a trip to England, London may have influenced my iniative towards this project. Now however we need to work together to implement a plan. We must figure out what is the best way to add the current city time to all city articles.

Suggestions: What to do

1 - we need to make a template based on the Ottawa article. (note: it even uses a reference to conform to the article), prototype complete: Some issues still exist regarding programming and references.

• we need to test it on a couple articles comment: prototype tested on Ottawa article and we may need to return back to the drawing board for logistic planing of step 2 and other improvements.
• Provide a list of different templates on these pages: Wikipedia:WikiProject Current Local City Time/Templates and have WP:CCT/Templates redirect to that page.

2 - we need to make a list of articles which we have successfully added the time stamp

• perhaps a new temporary category should be included in the template

• add a link to that new category from this page.

3 - Check [[Category:Cities by country]] and see if we can't make a program to send a message to every one of those article's talk page. Users would see the message and could add the time themselfs. (This is above my capabilities)

4 - Maybe we can take advantage of the geographical coordinates that appear at the top of some of these articles some how? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:DATE#Time_zones)

Categorize cities in UTC

• Add a categorization to different city templates: ie.: template:Infobox city (already done), Template:Canadian City, Template:US state, etc...

• Find more existing city templates and add the UTC code. so the cities are categorized
  • Request move of cities, that do not have the name of the province... ie.: Ottawa should be Ottawa, Ontario as per the common denominator suggest from category:UTC-5.
    • We will need to work at the templates instead.
  • Here is a list of other templates Category:City infobox templates, we need to pick the ones tha deal with cities.

Um, I don't really understand what it is that you're trying to do here, but adding Category:UTC to a widely-used infobox that then adds the redlink category to articles using the infobox doesn't seem a very wise approach. older ≠ wiser 15:18, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Still going? / proposal

Hey there! I just found this page. I'm just wondering what is up with this project. Has it been cancelled or are you guys still working on it?

What if we added a section to the Infobox Settlement template that checks to see if utc_offset, timezone_DST, and utc_offset_DST are defined in the infobox. If so, then display the current time in the infobox.

Example excerpt from proposed Ottawa infobox settlement template:
Time zone Eastern (EST) (UTC-5)
- Summer (DST) EDT (UTC-4)
Time as of page load: 10:53 Is this a reasonable idea? I think it would be great to work off of information that already exists. Additionally a link could be something like "incorrect?" or "edit", and it would allow you to add an additional offset, just in case the auto-generated value is incorrect. Hi Tkgd2007, the project prety much died off a while ago because I was having trouble formating the info box templates. I like your idea it brings an interesting twist which could work. Again though, it was dificult to implement this idea because some pages had mistakes. Those mistakes would cause a disruption to the format of a hanful of cities... though the concept worked for more than 10000 cities, it still disrupted about 10 cities and was enough to make this a significant uproar, virtually cancelling the "first idea". The delivery at the time wasn't so good either because it would put the time directly on the page. After that, I was a little despair of having to re-write another plan but some, perhaps, perfectly viable solutions have been discussed on the talk page. If we could somehow manage to put the time in the city box or better yet under the "coordinates" section that might work. Another solution instead of placing the time on each city was to place the time on the UTC page itself... for example UTC-5.
Finally, I was able to generate a list of cities using a special software for wikipedia which found all the article that linked to UTC-5. However that list is on my user page (a link can be found on the talk page of this project). Ultimatelly, I would like to see the time displayed on each city or geo zone. However the second option I proposed may be implemented quite easily with less possibility of disruption. Whatever the decision, if you're willing to work on this, we could most likely do it together. That would essential revive this project!! --CyclePat (talk) 19:35, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
