Some Wikipedians have formed a project to create a workable system for Deletion sorting, which has evolved into a complementary way of organizing deletion discussions (e.g. they are organized into topical lists in addition to their normal organization by date alone).
To help this project, please add new AFD discussions to one of the current list of deletion categories.
For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProjects and Wikipedia:WikiProject best practices. It must be noted that WikiProject Deletion sorting pages may not be used in violation of advertising and soliciting meatpuppets which states:
- It is considered highly inappropriate or unacceptable to advertise Wikipedia articles that are being debated in order to attract users with known views and bias in order to strengthen one side of a debate. It is also considered highly inappropriate to ask friends or family members to create accounts for the purpose of giving additional support. Advertising or soliciting meatpuppet activity is not an acceptable practice on Wikipedia.

Scope
This project involves transcluding AFD discussions in category specific pages, that makes it easier for people find a topic they have knowledge and interest in. In the past, and still in most cases presently, these discussions are organized solely by date. At one time this level of structure was adequate, because there were sufficiently few deletions that a person could review most of them on a daily basis while still contributing as a Wikipedian. However, Articles for deletion has grown far beyond human scale, with a throughput now approaching 1,000 pages per week and rising quickly. This has the effect of separating deletion debates from the healthy process of encyclopedia-building. It is hoped that a workable system for categorized deletion, which will bring deletion debates to the attention of editors active in relevant topical areas, will alleviate these problems.
Inspiration
This project was strongly inspired by Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting, and also by the historical discussion on deletion reform.

This project is similar to others concerned with improving Wikipedia's internal practices, such as those listed at Wikipedia:List of WikiProjects#Wikipedia. In particular, since it is concerned with categorization, it is similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Categories as well as Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting.

Scripts and Tools
- User:Jayvdb/Deletion sorting tool - (Requires Twinkle) Adds a 'delsort' tab when editing an AfD. The tab opens Compact list and adds the {{subst:delsort|<topic>}} to the AfD and adds the AfD to the deletion list.
- User:Pb30/Delsort tab (discontinued) - Adds a tab when editing AfD's that prompts user for a deletion list, then adds {{subst:delsort|<topic>}} to the AfD and opens the list in a popup window

Templates
- {{subst:delsort|<topic>}} is used for tagging active AfD discussions.
- {{deletionlist|<topic>}} is the standard header for deletion lists. It should generally be enclosed in "<noinclude>" tags.
- {{deletionlist-country|<country>}} is also used for countries
- {{deletionlist-USstate|<state>}} is used for U.S. states.
- {{Topic|<topic>}} can be used to identify and link to other central pages related to a given topic.
