Categories

I think your idea for categorizing holidays is great: nice heirarchy. Though I don't want to join the project, I commend your effort--I'd like to see what the project produces. I'm interested in what holidays England has, for example, as opposed to the US. I know how it feels to be the sole member of a project (see WP:WPAG), so I hope more people join! I just thought of something, but it may not need to be addressed until it happens. But some holidays may not fit nicely into one slot. For example, Christmas is, technically, a Christian holiday. However, in the US, many atheists and agnostics celebrate it, omitting any religious references (e.g. They emphasize Santa Claus, presents, etc.). I guess this is not a huge problem since these holidays could just be slapped into two places in the heirarchy. — Frecklefoot | Talk 20:06, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

Is there not a category that would cover holidays celebrated internationally, but not specific to any religion. Placing it in those two categories might make you think it is only celebrated christians and people from the US. I'm not sure anyone will think that, I'm just a bit of a perfectionist :) Darksun 17:20, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I don't think that anyone is confused about whether Christmas is a Christian holiday. People celebrate it in a variety of ways, but it is, at the base level, about the birth of Christ, and I suspect that most people would classify it based on that. But then, you have holidays like Valentine's day and Haloween, which are both Christian holiday's, but generally not celebrated for religious reasons. Darksun 08:26, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

But they are religious holidays, and I suppose you could add that to the article. They are also celbrated nationally (like Christmas in US and England I think). If anyone has any more ideas, please lend them, my proposal is simply a tentative one. — 21:21, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

first i think that this is an excellent idea for a projecti may want to help. second i think with something like this, we have to keep in mind wikipedia is more than international. so not only holidays from just the us should be included but all over the world. also other religions should be included ex: buddhism, pagan ritual etc. this could get really big if you include things like the holiday for cities being founded or county/state holidays etc. imagine the possibilities! --Larsie 21:35, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)

New Categories Proposal

I doubt if you can classify Christmas as international religious holidays. I don't think its celebrated in Islamic and far east countries. The only 'true' international holiday is the International Labour Day on 1 May. 06:40, August 22, 2005 (UTC)

Yes, it is sad that holidays like christmas and easter have become national. I suggest we make a step towards NPOV and classify those holidays, and anything else questionable, as "religous". "Secular" would mean, say, President's Day and Memorial Day. HereToHelp 20:38, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

i've made a diagram using the "secular holiday", religious "holy day" model. this has the least cross category occurrences that i could puzzle together, and also prevents categorical marginalization. thoughts?Some thing 20:15, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Template Suggestion

Assessment

I have noted that this project does not yet engage in assessment. I am a member of WikiProject Religion, which does engage in assessments. I was wondering if this project would have any objections to the Religion project setting up its banner in a way similar to WikiProject Australia, WikiProject Military history, and others, which have the "parent" banner on top with the assessment criteria and a section below indicating which particular projects have specific interest in the article. I could set up the Religion banner in a way to accomplish this. However, given the complexity involved, I would not want to do so and have things changed back later. Please inform me if this arrangement would be to your satisfaction or not, so I can know how to proceed. Thank you. Badbilltucker 14:58, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Proposed merger

I have proposed that Wikipedia:WikiProject Christian liturgical year be merged into this existing project. This project is rather more active, and has a larger scope, more likely to draw attention of other editors. Also, as indicated above, there is now a Portal:Holidays, which, depending on the view of the portal managers, may well be able to better publicize the content of articles relating to the Christian liturgical year. Support and Move - Their project is dead anyway, and they do not cover very much. I hope that it would revive the other project. Also, if they are not inactive and they want to keep their project, you could move it to a sub-page of this project and call it a task force. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. The group indicated above was recently revitalized for, among other things, the purpose of working on those articles whose content is such that the article does not fall within the scope of any particular denomination. To most effectively do this, however, we would benefit greatly if there were at least one member from this Project working on those articles. Wikiproject Festivals

Hey everyone I started a festival project on my talkpage to better expand the knowlage of festivals from around the world. my most recent participent told me to come to you it find out if this project can become merged with yours or if its better suited to just be on its own. this project that i have started has nothing to do with holidays and is all about the festivals held around the world. the project was started to expand the knowlage of festivals from everywhere around the world as long as they have been around for at the least 5 years and 15000 participents within one of those years. the project is here any help from anyone intersted is much appreciated. also im intrested in your desicion on making this a part of the holiday project so please get back to me thanks Maverick423 02:52, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Proposed Festivals merger

It has been proposed that this project merge with Wikipedia:WikiProject Festivals. I would personally support such a merger, given the generally overlapping subjects of the related projects. John Carter 01:31, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

oppose - the festivals project, last i read, dealt with alot of things that holidays wouldn't get into such as Rock n roll festivals and local festivals, and it also mentions that it would concentrate on things that are "not holidays". so i think that gives the holiday project a dominant position but still very separate focuses. the overlap is a problem i have dealt with before, but i think by keeping dialog with the festivals project we can iron it out on a case by case basis.Some thing 04:23, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

History of Christmas traditions

This article is in dire need of attention. I found it under another name. It has long, rambling unsecioned text, improperly formatted footnotes and other problems. I cleaned up a few things. its inappropriately named and seems to be lifted from an essay. it cant be refined without drastic dispersal and or cutting of information, to the point that you could pick and choose what the article is really about. i nominated for deletion. if you value any of the specific info, i suggest finding an appropriate article to merge it into. Holiday Heart Syndrome

I notice that the Holiday heart syndrome article is included under the scope of this project. Given that it's a medical condition caused by alcohol binges such as might happen while one was on holiday, is it really appropriate? I'd vote to remove it from the list. Hello all. I am working on an article about Christmas tree farms and am looking for some outside perspective. Feel free to chime in on the talk page of the user page linked below. Hey, I just joined this WikiProject because I am already so involved in Christmas-related articles that I should be part of the project. I have been pretty heavily involved in editing reindeer articles (I created Santa Claus' reindeer with the help of FT2). Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving (United States)

These two articles are quite similar to one another. The first is ostensibly about "Thanksgiving" in general while the second specifically relates to the American holiday (by contrast, Thanksgiving (Canada)), but Thanksgiving is still mostly about the American holiday. Do you have any idea how many there are? I can try to create a list of the major holidays, but the question becomes which liturgical calendars, if any, get included, and which order they all get placed in. Also, how would we define a "holiday" in the various countries? Are all civic holidays, religious holidays, etc. included, or are some excluded? If the latter, which? well, if you want to give a go at the gregorian calendar page Portal:Holidays/Calender go ahead, but for specific descriptions it would take a whole book. Check out Margaret Read MacDonald's The Folklore of World Holidays. And i agree with carter, its difficult to create an order to such a list when the holidays in question use different calendars (Lunar or exact solar) that never line up with one another. Plus wikipedia is designed to be surfed not printed out. Categories are another method of finding all the holidays. (Category:Holidays) Some thing (talk) 15:32, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme!
