HistoryXi’an Jiaotong University, a state key university administrated directly under the Ministry of Education of China, grew out of Nan Yang College founded in Shanghai in 1896, and renamed Jiaotong University in 1921. Arising from the national strategic plans for more balanced economic development, the State Council of China decided to move the main body of Jiaotong University inland to Xi’an in 1956. In 1959, the Xi'an part of Jiaotong University was officially renamed Xi’an Jiaotong University, and was listed as the state key university in China. Later, Xi’an Jiaotong University became one of the few selected universities under the 7th Five-Year Plan and the 8th Five-Year Plan of China. Xi’an Jiaotong University was the only university in the central and western regions of China named by the State Council under the National Program of Action for Educational Revitalization in the 21st Century to be a world-renowned university. In April of 2000, approved by the State Council, Xi'an Medical University, Shaanxi Institute of Finance and Economics were merged with Xi'an Jiaotong University and formed the new Xi’an Jiaotong University. XJTU is one of the most prestigious universities in Mainland China, and was placed tenth in the 2008 Chinese Universities Ranking.[1] It has been consistently ranked as the top school in China for management studies since 2002.[2]
