YP_BP_R is the analog video signal carried by component video cable in consumer electronics. The green cable carries Y, the blue cable carries P_B and the red cable carries P_R.

YP_BP_R^[1] is a color space used in video electronics, in particular in reference to component video cables. YP_BP_R is the analog version of the YC_BC_R color space; the two are numerically equivalent, but YP_BP_R is designed for use in analog systems whereas YC_BC_R is intended for digital video.

Being that people often get tongue-tied trying to say YP_BP_R quickly they are also commonly referred to as Yipper cables.^[2] YP_BP_R is commonly called "component video", but this is a misnomer, as there are many other types of component video (RGBHV, RGBs, RGsB, Y/C, etc.).

YP_BP_R is converted from the RGB video signal, which is split into three components, Y, P_B, and P_R.^[3]

• Y carries luma (brightness) information.
• P_B carries the difference between blue and luma (B − Y).
• P_R carries the difference between red and luma (R − Y).

A green signal is not sent as it can be deduced using the blue, red and luma information. This is done to avoid sending redundant information.

See the YC_BC_R page for the defining equations. The red blue and green cables are not physically different from Composite video cables (except for the color) and can be used interchangeably as long as you don't switch colors from beginning to end.

Some video cards come with Video In Video Out (VIVO) ports for connecting to component video devices.

This format is video only: Audio (sound) will require additional sound cables. For stereo expect a pair of RCA connector two wire cables.
