Yumiko Igarashi (いがらしゆみこ Igarashi Yumiko?, born 26 August 1950 in Asahikawa, Hokkaidō) is a female Japanese mangaka and artist. She is a resident of Sapporo, Hokkaido. In 1968, as a third-year high school student at the Asahi Gaoka High School in Sapporo, Hokkaidō, she made her debut in Shueisha's Ribon manga magazine with Shiroi Same no iru Shima. She won the 1st Kodansha Manga Award in 1977 as the artist of Candy Candy.[1] In 1990’s she infringed on the copyrights of the original authors of her manga and TOEI’s trademark right. Kyoko Mizuki, the original author of Candy Candy, accused Igarashi of breach of contract. [2][3]Igarashi is widely believed to have played a core role in fraudulent operations. After the judgment on the case of Candy Candy misappropriation, the museum which Igarashi’s accomplice Seiko Mitsushiro (三城誠子 Mitsushiro Seiko?) manages displayed Candy Candy arts without Mizuki’s permission.[4] And Kunio Nagatani (長谷邦夫 Nagatani Kunio?, born 1937 in Tokyo), a sympathizer of Igarashi, slandered Mizuki and Kodansha.[5][6] 2007, she tried to market an imitation of Candy Candy goods in Taiwan.[7] Then TOEI abandoned their anime Candy Candy merchandise and postpone the plan to make DVD set indefinitely.
